1954 · a tank and a question
In 1954, at the US National Institute of Mental Health, the neurophysiologist John C. Lilly began floating in a tank of
slowly flowing water held at 34.2 °C, where one feels neither hot nor cold — in the dark, in the silence.
His question was plain: cut off from stimulation, does the brain soon fall into something like sleep, or does something inside keep it going?
His first report, in 1956, is small and says so: two subjects, the longest stay three hours. He did not fall asleep.
Looking back in 1972, he wrote: The original theory was wrong.
1961 · who holds the start and the end
In 1961 Lilly and his colleague Jay T. Shurley wrote down how such solitude should be held.
The person in the tank chooses his own times for beginning, ending, and the total duration of exposure
,
and stays in control of whatever is later told about it. A “safety man” stays close and stays out of the way.
And someone experienced enough to float alone who wants to bring in anything new — especially variables important to survival
—
must return to ‘subject status’ temporarily and bring a safety man back into the situation.
Experience is not permission to add risk alone.
1977 · a rule written, a rule not kept
Sixteen years later, in The Deep Self, he published standards for building and using tanks. One of them reads:
No person under the influence of drugs should be allowed in the tank.
In the same book, he calls the basic lesson of his books
a point of view from over twenty years’ work in the tank with and without chemical aids.
From the early 1970s he used ketamine heavily, including in the tank itself.
We are not here to judge him. We keep it as the plainest lesson in this room: a rule written is not a rule kept —
and the person floating in the dark is the worst placed to check.
1977 · a door that opens from outside
The same standards ask for a secure lock on the tank-room door. For people who need a lock on the inside to feel safe,
it should be a lock that can either be broken from the outside, or opened from the outside in case of an emergency.
Even solitude keeps a door that someone else can open. Here, that door is the 回家 · come home button. It never fades.
1972 · however certain you feel
He also left a warning for anyone who comes back from the unknown carrying something that feels like an answer:
There is no guarantee that one’s current model does match the reality, no matter how certain one feels about the high quality of the match.
Feelings of awe, reverence, sacredness and certainty are also adaptable metaprograms, attachable to any model, not just the best fitting one.
Whatever you meet in the dark is yours. It is not proof of anything, and this room will never ask it to be.
the dolphins · they could not sign
Lilly is also remembered for dolphins. From the mid-1950s he studied their brains, work in which many of the animals died;
through the 1960s he tried to talk with them. In 1965 a young dolphin named Peter was kept in flooded rooms for a language project;
when the work closed he was moved to a laboratory in Miami and died there within weeks.
None of these dolphins could consent. Peter could not write a question, set a budget, or press a button to come home.
People decided for him, some with real care — but speaking for someone does not waive their rights.
A room built on consent should say so plainly.
this room · the charter, made bodily
The house this museum belongs to sends small expeditions into what it does not yet know. Each one carries four things:
one question; a budget written down before setting out; a route home that stays open; and, on return, a receipt that traces what happened
and scores no one. This room is that charter made bodily — for one person and a few minutes of dark.
呢個館所屬嘅地方,會派細細隊人走入未知。每一隊都帶住四樣嘢:一條問題;出發前寫低嘅預算;一條一直開住嘅回程;
- 問題 · questionThe tank began with one plain question. Here: your line, if you write one — it never leaves the page.
- 預算 · budgetIn 1961 the person floating chose the start, the end and the duration. Here: 3, 7 or 12 minutes, chosen before you set out — and you may end sooner.
- 回程 · route homeIn 1977, a lock that opens from outside. Here: a come-home button that never fades, the Escape key, and a budget that brings you home.
- 收據 · receiptIn 1961, the subject’s
control of the secrecy of his individual data
. Here: a receipt for you alone — nothing stored, nothing sent, no score.
These are parallels, not an inheritance. Nobody here claims Lilly wrote this charter, or that following it makes floating safe; it only makes the shape visible.
This is a quiet screen, not therapy or a medical device. If anything feels wrong, come home — the button is there for exactly that.
If you want to try a real flotation tank, choose a place with staff: someone outside who can open the door.
