01 The arrival
Art helps us feel, understand, and connect. This is a place to spend time with it.
Imagine yourself on this riverbank.
Where would you sit?
Five rooms. Fifteen works. Your own pace.

Georges Seurat · 1884–86
Oil on canvas · border added 1888–89
A whole afternoon holds still. Follow the light from the water into the shade, then notice how many small, separate worlds share the same patch of grass.
A way of looking: move between the scene as a whole and a single figure.

From a still pond to a rising wave, notice what happens to your own sense of pace.
Claude Monet · 1906
Let your eye float between the lilies. Where does the water become a reflection of the sky?
Oil on canvas
There is no horizon to settle the scene. Lilies, reflected light, and small touches of paint offer different places for the eye to rest.
Art Institute of Chicago · CC0 ↗
Katsushika Hokusai · 1830/33
Find the small mountain beneath the wave. Does it change how large the water feels?
Colour woodblock print
A great curl of water fills the sky while Mount Fuji holds its small, steady shape beyond. Follow the repeated curves of wave, boats, and mountain.
Art Institute of Chicago · CC0 ↗02 The evening room
Some works meet us as a feeling before they become a story.
Stay with the warm circle of light.
What begins to appear around it?
George Inness · 1891
Oil on canvas
The trees, sky, and ground seem to soften into one another. The moon gives the eye somewhere to rest; the small figure gives the landscape a human scale.
A way of looking: notice the edges that dissolve, and the ones that hold.

Give the darkness time. Then let a small boat carry you into coloured air.
James McNeill Whistler · 1872
Stay with the small golden light. What begins to appear when you give the darkness time?
Oil on canvas
The scene nearly disappears into a few close tones. Small points of gold and faint silhouettes give the eye just enough to begin finding its way.
Art Institute of Chicago · CC0 ↗
Odilon Redon · c. 1903
Follow the sail into the coloured air. Where would this drifting boat take you?
Pastel on paper
Clouds seem to bloom around a small boat. Stay with the meeting of the soft, coloured air and the few lines that hold the sail and figures in place.
Art Institute of Chicago · CC0 ↗03 The object room
There is a different kind of closeness in noticing how something is made.
Follow the outline slowly.
Where does its symmetry soften?
Korea · Joseon dynasty
Porcelain with glaze · late 17th–mid-18th century · maker unrecorded
A vessel can hold our attention through form alone. Look at the curve of the shoulder, the small foot, and the light travelling across the glaze.
A way of looking: let the outline, then the surface, guide your eye.

Move between porcelain, marble, and glass. Notice what each material asks of the light.
Cycladic; probably from the island of Keros · Early Bronze Age, 2600–2400 BCE
Follow the folded arms and long, quiet outline. How little does a form need to feel present?
Marble
Folded arms, a long neck, and a raised nose give this small figure a strong presence. Let your eye move between the broad planes and the fine changes at their edges.
Art Institute of Chicago · CC0 ↗
Roman; probably Eastern Mediterranean · Early 1st century BCE
Trace the striped rim, then the curve below it. Can something so small hold your whole attention?
Glass, mosaic glass technique
The bowl is just 5 cm high. A rhythm of dark stripes circles its rim, while the pale surface below catches the light in smaller, quieter ways.
Art Institute of Chicago · CC0 ↗04 The garden room
Words hang among the leaves. A painting becomes a place for poetry.
Let your eye follow a branch.
Imagine the words you might leave there.
Tosa Mitsuoki · c. 1675
Six-panel screen, one of a pair · ink, colours, gold leaf, and gold powder on silk
This work is also an object that shapes a room. Its six panels carry branches and poem slips across a gold ground, inviting the eye to wander between image and writing.
A way of looking: follow the rhythm of the panels, then the branches that cross them.

A small engraving and a flowering branch offer two more places for the mind to wander.
William Blake · 1821
Move from the dark leaves to the round light. What rhythm do the small white marks make?
Wood engraving on off-white paper
This image from The Pastorals of Virgil measures only 3.2 × 7.5 cm. Small white marks open trees, figures, and distant hills out of the darkness.
Art Institute of Chicago · CC0 ↗
Utagawa Hiroshige · 1857
Look through the nearby branches to the tiny people beyond. What changes when the tree becomes your doorway?
Colour woodblock print
A branch fills the foreground while visitors become tiny figures beyond it. The space between near and far turns a garden view into somewhere to enter.
Art Institute of Chicago · CC0 ↗05 The open room
A line can lead somewhere unexpected. So can a visit.
Choose a colour.
Follow it until it changes how you see the rest.
Vasily Kandinsky · 1913
Oil on canvas
Colour and black lines create a restless field of directions. The title gives one possible foothold; your own attention may find other shapes and associations.
A way of looking: try following colour first, then line.

A garden flickers into being; a mill becomes a current of colour. Leave room for either kind of surprise.
Berthe Morisot · 1882–83
Follow one loose brushstroke from a leaf into a sleeve. Where do the figure and garden begin to meet?
Oil on canvas
The blue of a sleeve and the green of a leaf share the same quick, open brushwork. Look for the places where a figure comes into focus, then dissolves back into the garden.
Art Institute of Chicago · CC0 ↗
Franz Marc · 1913
Follow the white water past the red wheel. Which colour makes the painting move for you?
Oil on canvas
Water, animals, buildings, and a red wheel gather into one restless scene. Follow a curve through it, then notice where an angular shape changes its direction.
Art Institute of Chicago · CC0 ↗The gallery can move with you
What would you hang beside what? Bring two works together, let their images overlap, and see what one helps you notice in the other.
White water bends both scenes into motion. Follow it through the wave’s blue curl, then down past the mill’s red wheel.
What route does your eye take along the water—and where does it stop?
A dark branch interrupts the garden. A seated figure gathers out of loose strokes and leaves. Each gives you a different place to stand.
Follow the dark trunk, then the blue sleeve. Where are you drawn closer?
Light traces the jar’s rounded surface; a small golden glow steadies the hazy harbour. Let each bright place draw you in.
Where does light describe an edge, and where does it let an edge disappear?
These are invitations to look. Your connection may be entirely different.
